Selling personalized laser products: licences, registration and product safety

Turning your hobby into a side business? Here are the points to know before selling personalized laser products online or at markets. An overview – not legal advice.

Are you allowed to sell the products?

Many laser file providers distinguish between personal and commercial use. So always read a file’s licence terms before selling.

With FRAMEBUDDY, commercial use is included in every paid plan: you may sell the lasered products – even after your subscription ends. What’s not allowed is passing on the files themselves as templates. Files from the free trial licence are for private projects only.

Product safety in the EU (GPSR)

Since 13 December 2024 the EU General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) applies to consumer products, including online sales. Among other things, your listing must show:

  • the manufacturer’s name or registered trade name,
  • a postal address and an electronic contact (email or form),
  • information to identify the product (e.g. picture and type),
  • warnings and safety information in an understandable language, where needed.
Tip: CE marking is only required for certain product groups – usually not for plain wooden decor. It can be different if your product counts as a toy or contains electronics (e.g. LED signs).

If you sell from Germany

Anyone selling regularly with the intention of making a profit usually needs to register a trade (Gewerbe) – regardless of turnover. If you ship packaged goods to consumers, registration with the packaging register LUCID is also required. Small businesses can opt out of charging VAT (Kleinunternehmerregelung); since 1 January 2025 the limits are €25,000 turnover in the previous year and €100,000 in the current year. Other countries have their own rules – check with your local authorities or a tax adviser.

Making it efficient

Personalized products live on turning a customer’s wish into a product fast. With a generator you type the name, check the preview and export in seconds – instead of adjusting every file by hand in your laser software. For customer approvals, some generators let you save a preview image to send in chat.
